Japanese Course Descriptions
Course I
This course is for students with little or no
experience with the Japanese language. Students
study the four skills of listening, speaking,
reading, and writing in a communication-based
approach. Students will learn correct pronunciation,
the fundamentals of Japanese grammar, hiragana
and katakana. Pair and group exercises, games,
and drills will be used extensively. Basic cultural
norms that influence language use and Japanese
customs will also be taught. Homework will be
assigned, and quizzes given. By the end of the
course, students should be able to exchange simple
greetings, introduce themselves, and ask and answer
simple questions regarding time, money, daily
activities, and location.
Course II
This course is for students who have completed
Course I or have some experience learning Japanese.
Students will continue practicing the four skills
of listening, speaking, reading, and writing with
a greater amount of vocabulary. Kanji (Chinese
characters) will be introduced. By the end of
the course, students should be able to do such
things as talk about past events, give compliments,
invite, request, and give orders.
Course III
This course is for students who have completed
Course I and II or equivalent study. The course
will introduce more complex sentence structures,
and a greater number of kanji. Particular emphasis
will be placed on improving fluency. By the end
of the course the student should be able to do
such things as ask and give permission, politely
refuse a request, express preferences, and talk
about the present condition of themselves, others,
and objects around them.
Course IV
This course is for students who have completed
Course I, II and III or equivalent study. Through
the introduction of advanced sentence structures,
students will learn to express more complex thoughts
and read more complex materials. They will also
learn how to use a Japanese character dictionary,
and will examine online and printed resources
for learning Japanese. By the end of the course,
the students will have acquired a solid body of
vocabulary, sentence structures, and reading skills,
and will be well prepared for continued self-study
of Japanese.
