Esteban Martinez Sensei

Martinez Sensei holds the rank of Godan (5th degree Black Belt) with Aikikai Hombu Dojo. In 1995 he began his Aikido training under Iris Ruiz Sensei, chief instructor of Goshinkan Dojo in Bayamón Puerto Rico. In the summer of 1998 he traveled to Chicago, IL to train in Aikido and Zen under the late Fumio Toyoda Shihan. While in Chicago, Martinez Sensei completed Toyoda Shihan's summer live-in Kenshusei training.  During this training, he lived, worked, and trained at Tenshinkan Dojo, headquarters of the Aikido Association of America.

In the spring of 2001 Martinez Sensei moved to Providence, RI to attend Johnson & Wales University to pursue a career in Culinary Arts. Following Toyoda Shihan's recommendation, he joined Shoshinkan Dojo in Cranston, RI and became one of their senior instructors.

Looking to push further his Aikido development and go back to the Zen training he experienced in Chicago, Martinez Sensei started visiting Zenshinkan Dojo to train and sit in Zazen with Robert Caron Sensei. In 2007 Martinez Sensei formally joined Zenshinkan Dojo, recognizing that Caron Sensei's Aikido is strongly rooted in Toyoda's style and his dojo emphasized greatly the integration of Aikido and Zen. He trained under Robert Caron Sensei until his retirement in 2016.

Martinez Sensei continues to study Zen under Hakuun (Gordon) Greene Roshi, a Zen master in the Chozen-ji tradition of Rinzai Zen and resident priest of the Spring Green Dojo in Wisconsin.

Martinez Sensei is also an accomplished Japanese Calligrapher and runs Gohitsu Shodo Studio, a website dedicated to the integration of cultural and martial arts. He teaches Japanese Calligraphy through online courses and live workshops. His calligraphy has been recognized by many and he has been commissioned to brush calligraphy for dojo's around the world as well as martial arts certificates, company logos, and Japanese woodblock prints.

When he’s not at the dojo, Martinez Sensei teaches Culinary Arts at Bristol Community College in Fall River, MA.
