Our Classes
Aikido - Adults & Teens
The Aikido program at Zenshinkan Dojo is conducted in the spirit of Budo – the Martial Way. Through rigorous martial training, students learn to respond to aggression with centered movement, to embody the principle of non-contention, blending with the energy of an attack and leading it to resolution.
The focus of Aikido training at Zenshinkan Dojo is to push through the limitations and barriers we impose on ourselves and move toward greater freedom in our lives. Aikido teaches us to find the power of physical and energetic connection. Body and mind are cultivated through physical exertion, refinement of technique, learning responsive ukemi, and development of the focus, effort, posture, and courage essential to effective self-defense.
Aikido - Kids
Our Children’s Class is designed for students aged 7 to 12. In this program, we provide children an experience of martial arts in a cooperative, supportive, and empowering environment where they will learn self-defense and virtuous behavior through Aikido. Students learn the fundamental self-defense techniques of Aikido, while at the same time developing physically, mentally, and socially.
Children’s aged 4-6 can participate in our tots program.
Ikebana - Flower Arrangement
Ikebana is a traditional Japanese art that has been practiced for more than six centuries. It developed from the Buddhist ritual of offering flowers to the spirits of the dead. It is now practiced as an art form independent of its religious origins, however the art has retained strong symbolic and philosophical meaning.
Zenshinkan's Ikebana program comes from the Ohara School of Ikebana, founded by Unshin Ohara in the late nineteenth century. The Moribana Style of Ikebana was first developed by the Ohara School. This was a pioneering and brilliant step in modern Ikebana. This style of Ikebana emphasizes the beauty of color as well as the beauty of nature.
Classes meet one or two Thursdays each month, from 6:30-8:00. For information, email us at info@zenshinkan.com.
Zen Meditation
Zazen (sitting meditation) is the basic practice of Zen as it provides the easiest conditions in which to experience a heightened state of awareness. Zazen cultivates sensitivity to subtle bodily sensations and connections, as well as to the flow of energy. To sit zazen well, one must harmonize the mind, body, and breathing. Only when the three are realized as one will it be possible to succeed in stabilizing and tranquilizing the body and mind at the same time. These three things are inseparable from each other.
